War of the Ring was a website devoted to the books of J.R.R. Tolkien and film adaptations, particularly the Lord of the Rings films by Peter Jackson. The site covered a wide array of material, including resources on Tolkien's books and weapons/armor; sections for art, fanfiction, and gaming; a shop; movie information; and forum and chat features. The first news item was posted 27 July 2002.[1] A main aim of the site appears to have been sharing news, especially related to Tolkien-based films and merchandise. The site went offline in 2014.
Fanfiction Archive
War of the Ring also included a section for fanfiction about Tolkien's world. Although a link for fanfiction was included in the site's menu from the outset, it did not point anywhere. In 2004, this section of the site opened, with the "Grand Opening" news item dated 26 February 2004. According to the earliest version of this page available via Wayback:
Welcome to the FanFic section at War of the Ring. Since we started people have been drafting and sharing FanFic in our forum. We thought it about time we provided a place for both finished stories and works in progress, outside of the Forums. So after a simple registration you can post your stories, write reviews, recommend or even contribute to them.[2]
The fanfiction section of the site used eFiction open-source software.
Although the fanfiction section of the War of the Ring remained online until at least 2010 (the 24 July 2011 Wayback capture shows the fanfiction section offline), the last news item[3] and story[4] in this section were posted in 2006. 740 stories by 206 authors existed as of this final capture. The main War of the Ring site remained online with the fanfiction section removed from its menu.
