Wank and Tell is an Archive of Our Own tag used to indicate that the author of a work would be flattered to know the reader got off to their fanfic.

It is meant to encourage readers who would like to thank an author for "assisting" their orgasm, or tell them that the fanfic was so hot that they masturbated to it, without making the author uncomfortable- if a fanfic is tagged with "Wank and Tell", the author would love to read a comment like this.

Dethna proposed the tag on November 14, 2021 and described its intended purpose:

“Have you ever wanted to thank a smut writer for a mindblowing orgasm but didn't wanna make it weird?

Are you trying your best to write the spiciest, most degenerate piece of erotica and all that people keep commenting is variations of "good writing/ that was hot"?

No more! Introducing the newest AO3 tag, "Wank and Tell"!

Any work tagged with "Wank and Tell" means that the author would be flattered to know you got off to their work, so please, wash your hands and give that nasty feedback!”

A Short poll for the name of the tag was conducted and included many options, and eventually the "Wank and Tell" option, that was proposed by Twitter user Katsudaki, won.

Usage on the AO3

On the Archive of Our Own, the number of works tagged "Wank and Tell" is slowly growing:

• 204 works on November 15, 2021, a day after the tag was proposed.

More data will follow on the future.
