wangxian+fan is the name of an anonymous AO3 commenter who left positive comments on all new fanworks posted in the WangXian tag. Their real identity and AO3 account, if any, are unknown.
wangxian+fan had a set of mostly generic positive comments that they reused frequently:
- "thanks for sharing!"
- "loved it all!"
- "cuteeeeeeee"
- "Awww so beautiful"
- "❤❤❤"
- "(╥﹏╥)"
Because all the comments are anonymous, it is difficult to say when wangxian+fan entered the fandom or whether more than one person posted as "wangxian+fan". They also could only comment where anonymous commenting was turned on, and some users could have deleted their comments. A look through the Wangxian tag in 2021 shows that wangxian+fan may have commented as early as December 2018, but not as consistently.[1] [2][3][4] wangxian+fan later went back through the tag to comment on works they had missed.
A few people expressed annoyance that when wangxian+fan commented too soon after a longer work was posted it was obvious they hadn't looked at it. However, many other fans appreciated wangxian+fan's dedication to spreading positivity in the fandom.
In July 2020 wangxian+fan left the fandom. According to secondhand accounts, wangxian+fan left a positive comment on a now-deleted fic that reincarnated WangXian as white British men.[1] Some of the fans who criticized the fic for being racist also started criticizing wangxian+fan. On July 18 twitter user unforth shared comments from wangxian+fan apologizing and announcing their intention to leave the fandom.[2]
Many fans were upset at the news that wangxian+fan had been bullied out of fandom. A tag and at least two collections are dedicated to them on AO3.
In later discussions about the toxicity and bullying in MDZS fandom, wangxian+fan is frequently cited as a victim. (The fic wangxian+fan commented on is an extreme example of a different trend in MDZS fandom that fans have discussed, of white Westerners writing Westernized fic.)
