The editorial:

Hello, Greetings, and Welcome to the first issue of Voices from the Present.

The idea for this zine struck me in late April of 1988. The idea quickly turned from a pleasing notion to an absorption. I had a lot of fun putting this zine together, and I only hope that some of the pleasure I got from doing it will be felt by you guys reading it.

There's an interesting variety of stories here, I think: some funny pieces, some deadly serious ones, stories from the first and second seasons, two (very different) treatments of the events on Gauda Prime, and a post G-P tale (potentially the first in a series, if this zine flies). Oddly, there aren't any third season stories at all, not fourth season ones other than the G.P. 'so This is something I'd like to see balanced out in future issues---so, come on, people.

A word about the artwork. This was the area of zine production that I was most anxious about. In fact, there was a stretch of time in which I thought Voices was going to turn out rather stark---all text, no pictures. But a fortunate mixture of serendipity and downright begging combined to provide quite an impressive collection of pieces. I'd like to offer a special, most heartfelt thanks to the artists in this issue: Theresa Buffaloe, Jo Ann Christy, and Denise Loague: without them this zine would have been a much poorer thing.

And, oh, yes, one more thing: comment is most definately requested. Feedback, please!

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 1

These are very good zines. I borrowed a friend's copies, but now I'll be keeping an eye out for them at used zine sales. I especially like the stories by Patricia Russo-- well-written and gritty. Did she ever continue her fifth series? I fear not, but I really like it; her Avon is very hard-edged.

Note the gen story by Melody C., a view of events on GP from an outsider.

All the stories by Lillian Fils are kind of suggestive. Both "Cause and Effects" in #1 and "Birthday Present" in #2 seem to hint at A/B-- unless I'm just imagining what I want to see. Has anyone else read these, and if so, what did you think? In "Priorities," everyone pairs off *except* Avon. I'd like to think that he's off for a little fun with Orac, his true love :).

And I found another Vila/Servalan story, only the fourth I know of. But in this one, she is his ex-wife!!

No bad stories, plenty of good ones. Recommended, if you can find the zines; as far as I know they're OOP. [1]
