Vida is a drama series inspired by Richard Villegras Jr.'s short story, "Pour Vida".
Canon
Vida follows two Mexican American sisters, Emma and Lyn, who move back to their childhood home after the death of their mother. The sisters are very different from each other and have been estranged for years. They quickly learn that they didn't know their mother as well as they thought, starting with meeting the woman their mother was married to, Eddy. Emma, who is queer, struggles especially with learning this as her mother was not accepting of her sexuality when she was growing up.
As well as learning about the life neither of them knew their mother had, the two sisters have to deal with the changes in the neighbour, try to find their places as part of it, and the growing pressures of gentrification and the impact it has on the community.
Fandom
Vida has a moderate fandom around it on Tumblr and the show was also discussed on Twitter and Reddit while on air, with discussions continuing into 2023 as new fans discover the show. Roberta Colindrez – who was introduced in season 2 as Nico – would go onto play Lupe García in A League of Their Own, and some fans of that show discovered Vida through her.
I finished vida and it's crazy that this show has only 22 episodes. Like this story is kinda half way done.. i would've easily watched 50-60 episodes. I would have loved to see the characters and their relationships change and develop.. i wanted lyn to stop being so influenced by men, i wanted Emma work her trauma out, i wanted the girls to develop a relationship with eddy, a good relationship. instead it's just over..The story is so interesting and different to (I'd assume) most American tv.. and it's crazy that show like this didn't go on for like 10 seasons.
I'm glad i watched it though. It's shot beautifully, acted emotionally, watching a story revolve around sisters, revolve around women, especially queer women is not something I'm used to and I'm trying to watch more things like that.
(also i feel like i have to mention that i had fun looking at nico.. roberta colindrez is just hot!!)crownspeaksblog [1]
