Verbotene Liebe is a German soap opera that first aired on January 02, 1995. One of the first major story lines focused on the forbidden love affair between Jan Brandner and Julia von Anstetten, two siblings separated as young children and raised apart. They met again as adults and fell in love, not realizing they were related. Forbidden love remains a constant theme throughout the show, with teachers becoming involved with students and step-parents falling in love with step-children.

Fandom

Since 2008, the romance between the characters Christian Mann and Oliver Sabel has drawn international attention [1] and sparked interest on livejournal [2].

frogspace (translated by acari): What constitutes the draw Oliver/Christian have on slashers? One answer that's been given again and again: It is like every slash story ever written.[3] [4]

International fans can currently watch Oliver/Christian clips on YouTube, either with or without subtitles.[5] Other fannish resources include the soap opera fanfiction archive NoLimits, named after the bar in the show. Most of the stories in the archive are Verbotene Liebe and Alles was zählt fic.

In 2010 it was announced that Sam Martin, a former vp at cable network HBO, had acquired the remake rights to adapt the Christian & Olli story line for the U.S. market.[6] An article in VARIETY describes the role online fandom and fansubs played in this decision:

Underscoring the growing popularity of German soaps, Santa Monica-based Aid and Abet has acquired rights to a gay storyline in pubcaster ARD's hit sudser "Verbotene liebe" (Forbidden Love).

Thanks to YouTube and an immense interest from the blogosphere, the storyline following Christian and Olli (also known as Chrolli) has attracted a cult following.

Aid and Abet will create a series, placing the characters' love story in Portland, Ore.

"Verbotene liebe" producer Grundy UFA has seen a similar phenomena with its other hit soap, "Gute zeiten, schlechte zeiten" (Good Times, Bad Times). Its tempestuous gay storyline about Carsten and Lenny (known collectively as "Cenny") has become an online hit on DailyMotion and YouTube, where fans edit down the daily episodes to present just the Cenny plotline to a huge and loyal international following.[7]
