Canon

Due to the many iterations of the franchise, specifics can often vary.

Fandom

Sexuality

She is known as a bit of a lesbian icon, with her appearance in the 2002 and 2004 live action films (played by Linda Cardellini) being many a sapphic's gay awakening. This version of the character is also commonly headcanoned as a lesbian in fandom, fueled by James Gunn, the films' writer, revealing in July 2020 that Velma was intended to be gay in the first film:

In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script. But the studio just kept watering it down and watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) and finally having a boyfriend (the sequel)[1]

A month earlier, Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated producer Tony Cervone had posted an image to his Instagram of Velma and Marcie in front of a Pride flag, clarifying in the post and in the comments that Velma was a lesbian in the series, even if it wasn't able to be explicitly shown.[2] Hayley Kiyoko, known affectionately as Lesbian Jesus for sometime, and a lesbian herself, played Velma in the 2009 and 2010 TV films and helped to fuel this headcanon even more.

Trick or Treat Scooby Doo!

On 4th October 2022, the animated film Trick or Treat Scooby Doo! was released. Soon after, a clip of the film began to trend online in which Velma is clearly and explicitly shown to have a crush on a female character. Upon the revelation, the news began to trend on Tumblr and many fans rejoiced at there finally being a canon sapphic version of the character.

Velma (2023)

In the 2023 Velma series, Velma/Daphne became canon, confirming sapphic!Velma. However, the show was so universally hated by the Scooby Doo fandom that this has largely been overshadowed, and any increase in shipping of the two has mostly been in spite of the show's version of the ship.
