Vachon's Library 2000 Fan Fiction Survey was a "Fan Fiction Survey for Readers and Authors." It was created by Bonnie Kate Pardoe, the owner of the site,[1] apparently in response to a lack of feedback for the Forever Knight fiction archive called Vachon's Library.
There were 714 respondents.
The survey itself is here. [2] The results are here. [3]
Fan Reaction
At the time, the survey was seen as a response to a lack of feedback by readers:
"Now, after reading the following posts, I went back to the SAME site from the addy that Cloud gave us and found: "Fan Fiction Survey for Readers and Authors" with the following request: "If you know what "Fan Fic" is, please fill out this survey! Your response will be highly valued." There is nothing indicating WHO is conducting this survey. But I'm GUESSING that Bonnie or some one involved with the "Missing" collection on Vachon stories has heard your pleas and is aware that there are devoted Vachon fans who read and liked these stories and that there are devoted Vachon fans who have expressed an interest in these works and in maintaining web sites/pages devoted to this collection. So I recommend that y'all visit the site Cloud gave us [see beginning of this post] and fill in the survey--and I think it also may impress whomever set up this survey that y'all are responding so soon after he or she set it up--that y'all are so interested in the Vachon fiction site that had been there that y'all were checking out that particular web page and cared enough to respond to the survey so soon after it was set up there. I take this as a HOPEFUL sign that SOMEBODY in FK Fan Fic-dom is listening/watching!"[4]
In a later post, the reasoning behind the survey was clarified:
"You're all are aware that the Library at the Church of Vachon being taken down due to "lack of interest" is a major bummer to me because I liked that archive and I hadn't begun to read everything in it even though I went there at least twice a month. (I check my "history" last night and there it was.)In its place as of last night is a survey about attitudes towards fan fiction. She asks about why people do or do not write feedback to authors. She asks authors about why they write and how they feel about feedback. As I filled it out the thought occurred to me (a bit late) that although I've made a point of telling Mel and Diana more that once that I appreciate their archives, I never did that with the Church. Right about now I could kick myself.
As fellow Vachon fans, may I ask you to fill it out? I'm hoping if the administrator gets sufficient responses she will reconsider her decision to close down the library."[5]
