V.I.P. Weekend: Beauty Meets the Beast was a 1989 for-profit event sponsored by K-Mart to promote Beauty and the Beast (TV) in general, and specifically, the audio cassette: Of Love and Hope.
During the weekend, one winner of this group was chosen to be an extra on the show. This honor went to a fan named Judy.
A Fan's Description
A fan, Carol, included their description in Once Upon a Time...Is Now #17 (December 1989):
I was one of the ten lucky winners... And I mean lucky! I found out there were 200,000 entries -- a fact which, I am told was a contributing factor in the renewal of B&B. This means I am doubly lucky that they had the contest for I am an avid fan and would have been devastated if it had been cancelled!
[We] were flown to Los Angeles on November 3... we were given a reception at our hotel, the Bel Air Summit, that evening, hosted by Ashlie Stoken and Connie Baer of the Gary Group, a publicity company hired by Capitol Records to promote "Of Love and Hope." They gave us copies of the cassette, the 45 single, "The First Time I Loved Forever," a lovely big poster of Vincent as he appears on the cover of the cassette, all of which I cherish as mementos of the weekend. The especially nice thing about the reception was a chance to meet and talk to the other winners and their guests, comparing our feelings about B&B and how many times we entered [the contest]. For the record, the number of entries [the winners submitted] ranged from one to "a whole bunch." I personally entered 60 cards, but four of the winners sent in four or less.
The next day we were all taken to the Georgette Klinger Salon on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills for a facial, scalp treatment, manicure, hairdo and makeup session. The four hours of pampering was very relaxing and made me feel terrific! I have always wondered what I would look like made up by a professional, and that was one of the reasons I entered the contest -- besides my devotion to "Beauty and the Beast." Anyhow, I was very pleased with the results and made sure I had lots of pictures taken!
That evening, before going to the Comedy Store, where we were entertained by some really good comedians, including Jimmy "J.J." walker of Good Times, they chose the National Winner -- the one who will get to be on "Beauty and the Beast." Although I was not chosen, I feel really fortunate to have gotten as close as I did and to have the opportunity to make some new friends.
