Image Licenses
Hi! I notice you uploaded some Cloud/Tifa fanart with the copyright license marked as CC BY-NC-ND. I couldn't find confirmation in any of the linked tweets that the art was released under a Creative Commons (CC) license. Please be cautious not to mark images as CC unless you are certain they were released under such a license. Otherwise, it is probably safe to assume that they are copyrighted by the artist. Copyrighted fanart uploaded to Fanlore should be marked as fair use. "Fair use" is a framework in U.S. copyright law that allows for limited non-commercial use of copyrighted material for transformative or educational purposes. Basically, Fanlore is a non-commercial educational encyclopedia about fan culture, and so including fanart examples in articles may help readers learn. We need to be careful about not presenting copyrighted material as freely usable. This is is an easy mistake to make, especially if you're new to wikis. :) Night Rain (talk) 05:14, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation, I hadn't understood what it meant at all, I'd been inspired by how you'd added a drawing to the gallery section but I should have done more research, sorry. I asked the artists for permission in private messages on X (formerly twitter) to be able to post their fanarts in the fanlore page and they all kindly agreed. This is all new to me and I'm learning a lot, have a nice day. Zayana (talk) 14:08, 6 January 2024 (UTC+1)
- No worries! Wikis have a learning curve. But errors are generally easy to correct. Since you obtained permission from the artists, this can replace "fair use" as the license. There may be a special template for this. Otherwise a sentence like "Permission obtained from the artist to use on Fanlore" would suffice. Thanks for going the extra mile by reaching out to the artists! Night Rain (talk) 13:18, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
