Plumbago Capers is a detective adventure film and TV series that takes place on an island inhabited by aliens called Phoenocats. It follows the adventures of the characters Jun Kim (also known by pen name Dominique Pengi), Nina Tereshchenko, and Gilberto de Sousa. It also has the cuddly alien Phoenocats. Many have compared it to Sherlock Holmes as well as Scooby-Doo.[1]

Canon Overview

The series, set in the modern day, follows the adventures of Jun Kim, Nina Tereshchenko, and Gilberto de Sousa, as they solve various crimes and mysteries. The series began with a movie and was then adapted into five seasons. After the disastrous Christmas Special in 2022, Plumbago Capers was cancelled, with no new seasons since. A tie-in novel, Plumbago Capers: Olives on the other Side was written to follow the adventures of Gilberto de Sousa's brother, Adriano, set five years before the movie in America.

Fandom

In the Plumbago Capers fandom, fans are divided between Movie!verse fans, and fans who subscribe to the entire canon. Movie!verse fans prefer the dark gritty aspects of the three movies, and usually ignore the feature-length Christmas Special. The fandom itself is large and sprawling, with many fans creating gifsets during the series run, meta essays speculating on long-running mysteries, and fics shipping the various characters.

There's a strong presence of rarepair shippers, shipping characters like John, Jin-Tae, Alina, Casiopea, Cyrus, Damen, and even characters like Kimaya and Scott who appear in only one or two episodes.[2] The famous essay "why I ship Alina/Casiopea and you should too" by tumblr user lightsideofthedarkside broke containment and was featured in Variety Magazine.[3] Javier Darios, the actor who plays Gilberto, was asked about it during an interview, and said "Alina? I don't remember that character."[4]

Following the fic Phoenocats and Phoenokittens[5] in 2018, a large worldbuilding-oriented fandom emerged, with a strong focus on the alien cats, worldbuilding about human-alien relations, and space travel. Many users on Tumblr wrote meta posts speculating on Phoenocat biology and alien technology, and a genre of fic called Phoenofic emerged.[6]

The fandom has also contributed significantly to fundraising for Doctors Without Borders.

Kimina vs Kimberto

Kimina vs Kimberto is a long-running ship war between shippers of the shippers of two Jun Kim pairings: Kimina (Jun Kim/Nina Tereshchenko) and Kimberto (Jun Kim/Gilberto de Sousa).

Due to the series' cancellation, there was never a canon ship, which means this ship war rages on to this day. This has not stopped rampant speculation about what the showrunners planned to do, or which ship works best.[7] The Kimberto fandom in particular points to the kiss in S4E06 as evidence for the ship, while the Kimina fandom considered the huddling for warmth scene in Dead of Winter to be more important. The popularity of the Kimberto ship has resulted in regular "Kimberto Fests" where authors and artists create Kimberto fanworks.[8]

In 2019, after Dead of Winter, the Kimina fandom held a charity fundraiser for Doctors Without Borders, auctioning fanworks and commissions to raise over $5,000 to donate to charity.[9] The "hostile bids" submitted by the Kimberto fandom resulted in the Kimina v Kimberto MSF Wank.[10]
