UppCon is the largest anime convention in Sweden and has since the start in 2002 run ten times in Uppsala. The eleventh UppCon is to be held in the Uppsala Culture and Congress Center (UKK) and is planned to have approximately 4000 visitors.
The programming includes Japanese musicians, video games, cosplay contests, karaoke, anime and movie screenings and an artist alley.
History
UppCon is arranged by the non-profit organization Uppsalakai and has since the start been led by Daniel "Lendai" Petterson.
The first UppCon ran in 2002 with 50 attendees at the cinema Slottsbiografen in Uppsala and the program mainly consisted of anime viewing. As it grew, more floors were rented at Slottsbiografen. By the fifth time, UppCon moved to the congress center Atrium and had about 700 visitors.
The eighth UppCon had over 2000 visitors and Atrium was getting far too small. The convention moved to UKK and has since then also expanded to include the plaza outside.
The convention runs Friday to Sunday and is open round the clock during these days, although it is not permitted to sleep in the actual con rooms. Like with most Swedish cons, several nearby schools are rented to provide very cheap accommodation for many of the visitors.
