UNKNOWN is a fangame for OFF created by Claude Huggins (also known as Zacheriecide) and an anonymous assisting team.
Plot
This article or section needs expansion. |
The game is a post-canon scenario where the player controls Zacharie as he attempts to reverse the purification of the zones.
Along the way, Zacharie encounters The Batter in ghost form, as well as several original characters. Notable ones include the Elsen merchant Bandit, Charlotte (also known as The Observer), and Seneca. Bandit and Charlotte are borrowed characters, with Bandit belonging to the artist doughguts.
Reaction
The game developed a small fanbase of its own initially that has since tapered off almost entirely. This is in part due to controversy involving the actions of the character Seneca, who is indirectly depicted sexually assaulting Charlotte in a way that has been viewed as disrespectful to victims of sexual assault. The developer has apologized and given this explanation:
The main reason for Zone 2′s removal is that it contains a scene depicting assault that was handled in a very insensitive way. In the interest of keeping my promise of not telling sob stories or doing callouts, I will keep it short and say that Zone 2 was not written by me, and this scene was put into the game without my full consent. However, this does not mean I’m not responsible for the scene being in the version of the game that was released to the public. Beyond all else, UNKNOWN was my own project, and everyone on the team was aware of this. At any moment I could have made the choice to remove this scene from my game. I feel insulted that such a scene used a character of mine that I love so dearly, that my favorite OC I’ve ever made is depicted committing such an action, but I had every power in the world to prevent it. I did not do so because I was worried the assistant involved would drop their support – even though the game was pretty much complete at this point and their refusal to continue would not have mattered. [1]
Permission to use borrowed characters in any future projects was revoked from the developer.
The two most well-received characters in connection to the game are Bandit, a breakout character in a literal sense, and its version of The Batter, who has been drawn alongside Ghost Batter from the fangame Continue/Stop/Rise and occasionally shipped with him.
