Reactions and Reviews

1989

I LOVED this story of Kirk and Spock learning to live together in shared quarters. All their little disagreements, agreements, and fights felt so real! I was laughing through most of the story, while also amazed that such bland subject matter could, in the hands of a skillful author, be made so entertaining. I just can't say enough about it. This story had some neat phrasing throughout. The first couple of pages had a wonderful, warm mood, and I loved the opening paragraph where, "he slipped into the iris of gentle dreams almost as warm and welcoming as the arms that were encircling him.' Other favorite phrases were more humorous: Spock being 'caught with his logic down'; McCoy's warning, "Be prepared to eat crow for your vile suspicions"; Kirk's halted profanity because, "Spock only tolerated that word when they both were doing it." A couple of teeny tiny nitpicks: 1) Kirk came across as unbelievably cruel when protesting about Spock sleeping with his eyes open; 2) The ending was a bit of a letdown, in that the final paragraph didn't carry near as much 'punch' as the rest of the story. The accompanying Kay Wells illos — each so detailed as to be worth at least 1000 words — were the icing on what as already a thoroughly delicious cake. In short, I just loved the 'homey' flavor of this. Re reading is guaranteed. [1]

I like this story of adjustment between 'newly marrieds.' It was good to see how readily the others on the ship accepted the couple and how willing they were to help. [2]

I hope the author isn't insulted if I think her story is cute. It's hard to write humor and cutesy stories without seeming stupid. This story is a charmer and the most enjoyable in the zine. It's a different view of Kirk and Spock.

The Kay Wells illos on pages 124 and 134 I thought were very nice. The one of Kirk on the floor is nicely drawn. Spock's expression is interesting. The other shows Kirk reading. I like his face in both pictures. She's drawn the bodies well in both, too. [4]
