A triptych is a visual art form that originated in early Christian art as a three-piece panel painting used as an altarpiece. The triptych form also appears in stained-glass windows. Each panel depicts a related scene or portrait. See Wikipedia.
In fanart, this form might be used in order to evoke a Medieval or Christian aesthetic. The term triptych is also applied more broadly to modern three-part paintings or photograph sets, and some fanart uses this form, though it is less popular than single-framed character portraits and scenes.
