Con Reports
Having overcome my doubts about one-day conventions, I welcomed this one with open arms. Since the committee was one I knew well (many carry-overs from August Party) I was especially excited, and I wasn't disappointed. Although this convention had next to no one in the way of guests they used a great deal of imagination in programming. Since it was held at the University of Maryland, the con lent itself to an educational atmosphere which immediately taken advantage of. An instructor from the University's Astronomy Department (known to give Star Trek questions on his exams) was there to give a slide show on life in the universe. A very special aspect of the con was the appearance of two representatives from the Soviet Embassy, who spoke about the Soviet Space Program. They also had anew film about the Soviet role in the Apollo/Soyuz mission. Both were fascinating as well as enlightening. John Ellis was back [1], this time with a slide show on "Star Wars", and Dick Preston talked on space colonies. The atmosphere was very relaxed. The lecture halls used made perfect film rooms (everyone had a clear view) and the films themselves were great fun. "Planet of the Apes", "K-9000: A Space Oddity" and even the pilot film for The Green Hornet" highlighted the day, and there were three blooper reels on hand. Many model rocket launches were made on the mall through the day, and I had a personally rewarding experience in my first day as a dealer...I sold out all copies of Fesarius 1 before noon, and was able to enjoy the rest of the convention.
To make the day even more profitable, I won 2nd place in the art contest — a free ticket to Phillycon![2]
