Reactions and Reviews
The MIND MELD series of zines are not K/S, but since they contain so very much of what I’ve just expounded on above, I’d like to mention something I recently read in #7. Ginna LaCroix has written a great deal of what I would call pre-K/S and has an incredibly sensitive and talented way of capturing the essence of what connects Kirk and Spock. Whether you believe it is sexual attraction or profound friendship hardly matters. In this zine, she contributed a piece written around STVI and in particular the mind meld between Spock and Valeris. I hadn’t seen much previously that explored what a toll this forced meld took on Spock and how much he suffered because of the guilt he felt for not realizing Valeris political leanings. Most of what Ginna has written revolves around the younger Kirk and Spock of TOS, but she knows her mature captains just as well. She reflects on the pain both men feel and how they learn to deal with it together. The scene that stays with me takes place in the observation lounge where Spock has retreated in an attempt to find peace with himself. When Kirk finds him there, it is evident he has been unsuccessful, as tears are streaming down his face and he is gripping the chair arm so hard he’s crushed it. LaCroix writes: “There was no answer from the Vulcan, only a ceaseless tremor of raging emotion that shook both their bodies. Kirk rubbed his hand up and down Spock’s arm. He had never seen the Vulcan so out of control, and could think of nothing to say that might help. All he could do was to hold Spock tightly, and hope that would be enough. McCoy found them there hours later. Kirk was sitting staring out at the passing starfield with Spock asleep in his arms.” This is only a small sampling of the tenderness she captures. [1]
