The Transformers G1 Marvel comics are technically the very first original fiction in the Transformers franchise, predating even the TV show. They helped establish the series' fandom and developed many characters far more extensively than the TV show.

Fandom

While the series clearly had a fandom, it is hard to find now, as it consisted largely of preteens and mostly predates the Internet. Members of the current creative staff for various aspects of the Transformers franchise, such as James Roberts of the currently running More than Meets the Eye series, got their starts in the fandom of the G1 Marvel series. It also led to Simon Furman, one of the writers, becoming a major player in Transformers fandom. Current fanwork numbers for it are hard to find, as fanfiction.net doesn't distinguish between it and the other series in the Generation One continuity, and the fanart is largely indistinguishable for any other G1 series. AO3 lists less than thirty fanworks for it; at such low numbers, analysis of popular characters and pairings is useless.

Continuity

It is set in the overall G1 continuity, although it is its own series. As with all G1 series, it shares many worldbuilding traits with the original TV show, although technically it predates the show. It was eventually succeeded by the Dreamwave and IDW comics, although not until many years later; they are separate series, though.
