Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun, known in English as Toilet-bound Hanako-kun, is a shounen anime and manga. It centers on a bathroom ghost and his reluctant apprentice as they mediate conflicts between the supernatural and mundane at Kamome Academy.

Canon overview

Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun follows Yashiro Nene, a first-year high school student whose crush on an upperclassman leads her to seek supernatural help from one of the so-called Seven Mysteries of Kamome Academy. When she calls on a bathroom ghost, she's expecting a girl, but instead she meets with a weird young boy. After a series of mishaps, Nene ends up working as Hanako-kun's assistant in managing Kamome Academy's supernatural affairs. As she helps Hanako-kun, Nene learns more about him, as well as about herself, her friends, and the supernatural world.

The manga began serialization in Square Enix's Monthly GFantasy magazine in 2014, and is ongoing. The manga is licensed in North America by Yen Press. The 12-episode anime adaptation was produced by Lerche in 2020 and is licensed in North America by Crunchyroll.[1] A reboot of the anime was announced in late 2022. [2]

The series mixes the supernatural, mystery, and romance genres, and features numerous references to both classical Japanese folklore and more modern interpretations thereof. The manga is known for its distinctive, stylized art and for its dramatic, emotional plot.

Useful Notes

Akane Aoi and Aoi Akane are two different characters; their names are easy to tell apart in Japanese but not when written in the Roman alphabet. To avoid confusion, some English-speaking fandom spaces use their nicknames instead of or in addition to their names. In such spaces, Akane Aoi is called Ao-chan, while Aoi Akane is Glasses.

Relationships

  • Hanako/Nene - the fandom's juggernaut het ship, as the relationship between these two drives the canon plot and both characters have shown romantic interest in one another.
  • Minamimoto Kou/Mitsuba Sousuke - the biggest slash pairing in the fandom, prominently featured in fix-it works.
  • Minamimoto Teru/Aoi Akane (Glasses) - often featured in fanworks as a side ship, but still popular in its own right
  • Akane Aoi (Ao-chan)/Aoi Akane (Glasses) - another ship strongly implied by canon
  • Akane Aoi (Ao-chan)/Yashiro Nene
  • Hanako/Yugi Tsukasa - this ship is essentially twincest, and draws on both Tsukasa's current behavior toward Hanako and the lingering mysteries about the relationship between the twins leading up to their deaths.
  • Minamimoto Kou/Hanako - this is a ship essentially built on the rivals-to-lovers trope that enjoys a reasonable amount of popularity given that its members are both involved in other, more popular ships.
