The sisters Tohsaka Rin & Matou Sakura are main characters in the 2004 visual novel Fate/stay night and its related media.
Background
Rin and Sakura are sisters. They were both born to the Tohsaka family of mages, but only one of them was able to be the heir to their family's magic. As mage society places a high value on ambition and achievement, their father chose to adopt Sakura out to another mage family, the Matou, so she could inherit their magic and become a great mage. Unfortunately, the methods used to pass down the Matou magecraft were intensely traumatic, and as a condition of the adoption, Sakura and Rin were forced to treat each other as strangers. [1]
Other than their relationships with the main character, Emiya Shirou, Rin and Sakura are arguably each the most important person in the other's life.
