Tohru Adachi is a primary character in the 2008 JRPG, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 and its subsequent spin-offs, Persona 4 Arena, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, and Persona 4 Dancing All Night. In Persona 4 and Persona 4: Golden he serves as the game's main antagonist, while redeeming himself as an ally in Persona 4: Arena Ultimax. In the official anime adaptation, he serves mostly the same role but is given a backstory. Within the canon of the manga series, he has many additional traits that are not mentioned in game or elsewhere among the franchise. (It's worth noting that the manga does not reflect the games' canon lore, as it was written outside of Atlus' direction)

The most popular ship involving Adachi is undoubtably Yu x Adachi, although Dojima x Adachi and Adachi x Yosuke are still prominent. A large amount of controversy exists among Adachi ships since they frequently glorify abusive behavior, mental illness, the idea of murder, and adult on minor relationships.

- On November 24, 2020, ThoughtBubble uploaded a video essay on YouTube called "The Psychology of Tohru Adachi"[2] analyzing the behavior of Adachi and comparing it with the diagnostic criteria of Antisocial Personality Disorder. This analysis has affected public opinion on Adachi's motives and given him a theoretical diagnosis (APD).
