Thunderstruck is a zine project focused on the relationship between Katsuki Bakugou and Denki Kaminari. The project was unable to complete fulfillment due to a case of moderator misconduct that also affected other zines.

About

Thunderstruck is a for-profit zine centered around the Boku no Hero Academia ship, BakuKami (i.e. Bakugo Katsuki & Kaminari Denki).

As a physical zine Thunderstruck will contain both SFW and NSFW content compiled into a single booklet with related merch. Due to the included NSFW content all contributors and consumers must be 18 years old or older.

The theme for this zine is simple, BakuKami! It is our hope to showcase this pairing and it's aspects including but not limited to canon, canon divergent and alternate universes.[1]

Interest checks for a BakuKami zine began on August 2020[2]. The interest check was closed on September 30, 2020[3]. Moderator applications ran from October 4 to October 20, 2020[4]. The deadline was extended to October 25, 2020[5].Contributor applications for artists, writers, and beta readers ran from November 10 to December 1, 2020[6].

A poll was run on social media to submit name suggestions the title for the zine from September 30 to October 15, 2020[7]. A poll on Twitter presented the possible options as Flasbang, Stun Grenade, Thunderstruck, and Flash Bomb, with Thunderstruck winning the majority of the results[8].

For Valentine's Day, the project's social media account hosted a Valentine's Day Contest from January 21 to February 11, 2021[9]. Fans were asked to submit artwork and fanfiction that "captures both the romance and love between Kaminari Denki and Bakugo Katsuk as well as the Valentine's Day holiday as a whole." Winners would receive digital copies of the zine and digital merch. Unfortunately the contest was cancelled due to insufficient number of entries[10].

Preorders opened on June 14, 2021 with the following pricing tiers[11]:

  • Sparks ($15 USD) - Digital Zine, Coloring Pages, Phone and Desktop Wallpapers, Emotes
  • Nitroshock ($25 USD) - Physical Zine, Digital Zine, Digital Merch
  • Extras ($25 USD) - Die-cut Stickers, Buttons, Sticker Sheet, SFW and NSFW Print, Charm
  • Ignite the Storm ($35 USD) - Physical Cinze, Random Stickers, Sticker Sheet, SFW and NSFW Print
  • Thunderstruck ($50 USD) - PHysical Zine, SFW and NSFW Print, Die-cut stickers, Sticker Sheet, Buttons, Charm, Digital Zine, Digital Merch

A preorder bonus of a holo sticker was offered to the first 50 physical orders[12]. A givewaway was run from June 22 to June 20, 2021, for a full bundle[13]. The winner of this giveaway was Twitter user bkoebakuhoe[14]. To celebrate Denki Kaminari's birthday, a flash sale was run from June 29 to July 1, 2021[15]. Preorders closed on July 27, 2021, with a total of 101 orders[16]

During the production period, the social media account posted proof pictures of items[17].

On November 12, 2021, the project announced that they could not complete fulfill orders due to the misconduct of their new finance mod, who joined after their original finance mod had to step down from the project for personal reasons. The following is a copy of their statement:

It's with deep regret that the team behind Thunderstruck must give this final announcement. Some of you may know we lost our original Finance/Shipping Mod due to personal reasons but we quickly found a replacement Mod Silver (@silverstring000). Unfortunately, due to Silver's unprofessionalism we now find our project's success at risk. Other projects: Creati's (@creatiscrafts) and Plain to Fame (@plaintofaimzine) have also been subjected to this unprofessional behavior. However projects: Boom Brigade (@bakusquadcal) and Underdogs (@Underdogszine) like Thunderstruck are the only ones among the five that have been financially affected. Because of Silver's actions we regret to inform you that our project is unable to complete our original plan for production and fulfillment. In the thread below there is a document compiled by mods of all these projects that will give better insight to the severity of the situation. At present the situation unresolved, we ask that anyone who has placed a pre-order for Thunderstruck to request a refund through Paypal, Stripe or the banking institute used to purchase.

Please be assured Thunderstruck, including the Mod Teams from the other affected zines are working towards a solution to this. We thank you for all your continued support and ask that you stick with us a little longer as we continue to keep you informed and bring the situation to a close.[18]

On the same day, the mod team of Thunderstruck was featured in a statement put out by the mods of Boom Brigade regarding the unprofesisonal conduct of their finance mod, Silver[19]. The statement included Discord screenshots as evidence. The following paragraph is a summary of Silver's behavior on the mod team of Thunderstruck in particular.

Silver was introduced to their team on April 26, 2021, as a replacement for a previous finance and shipping mod. After preorders closed, Silver stopped communicating with the mod team and failed to notify the team for formatting corrections in a timely manner. Through Silver's order invoice, the mod team discovered a significant difference between the amount of merchandise required to order and the amount of merchandise actually paid for. The discrepancy gave rise to concern about how the funds were being handled, since both the project's Paypal and Stripe were in Silver's name and no login credentials were shared. Attempted correspondence from the mod team with Silver upon this revelation received no response.

A new update came on November 19, 2021, informing buyers to close their refund claims, since the mod team had arranged for funds to be redirected from Silver to Raine, the head mod[20]. The project's funds were announced secured by the head mod on November 22, 2021, with hopes of moving forward with production[21]. In the same announcement, the head mod also issued the following apology, stating that the situation could have been handled better and that the project will continue production, even if it means the zine may have to be released for free and all buyers be refunded. The mod team continued to handle refunds in the early quarter of 2022.

The project remains in production status as of January 2, 2023.
