Things That Happen is a Jack/Daniel story by Quercus.

Reactions and Reviews

This story is written from Sam's viewpoint. It starts and ends with Sam dealing with her period and cursing the mission scheduling that appears to be planned to catch her at the worst time of the month. As she deals with menstruation on an alien world, she muses over what her teammates think about her occasional bouts of PMT and thanks her lucky stars that all of them have been married. This very different beginning hooked me from the start and I enjoyed watching Jack, Daniel and Teal'c as seen through Sam's eyes.

Sam 'finds out' about Jack and Daniel from overhearing an argument during a mission that goes wrong. The argument resolves somewhat differently from the way she would expect but she finds it hard to believe the evidence of her ears. Her suspicions aroused, she begins to watch the two of them but sees nothing that would confirm her suspicions.

It is at a party at Jack's place, held to celebrate Cassie's birthday, that she gets her confirmation. Shocked, she invites Teal'c round to discuss it. Despite some miscommunication, she confirms that Teal'c is aware of Jack and Daniel's relationship but has not, and will, not speak of it to anyone. She reveals to Teal'c that she is disturbed, not by the relationship itself, but that it has been going on for so long and she wasn't aware of it.

Sam's friendship with both Daniel and Teal'c is clearly depicted, as are her frustrations and difficulties with being the lone woman in an otherwise male team. Her mild envy at Jack and Daniel's closeness, even before she is aware of the nature of their relationship, is shown early on. It is within this background that Sam's acceptance of Jack and Daniel appears realistic. She is neither enthusiastic nor antagonistic, just pragmatic. The impression given is that all three of her teammates mean far too much to her for her to rock the boat.

This gentle and delightful piece of story telling is made all the more interesting by being in Sam's viewpoint. It manages to convey Jack and Daniel's relationship without ever showing it overtly, and it also

shows the reciprocal affection that Jack, Daniel and Teal'c feel for Sam. In that sense it is as much a depiction of SG-1 working together as comrades and friends as a J/D story.[1]
