There's Only One You, sometimes abbreviated as to1u or just 1u, is a prompt meme in Sports RPF fandoms. It is an annual challenge run using AO3's native prompt meme format. It is centred around making short fanworks, such as, but not limited to fanfiction, podfic and fanart.

Rules

Prompts must be submitted in the format: 1 pairing + 1 word.

Fanworks must be no longer than the following:

  • Fic: 2000 words
  • Podfic: 20 minutes
  • Fanart: 2 hours of effort
  • Playlists: 10 songs
  • Vids: 2 minutes
  • Creative non-fiction: 2000 words
  • Fan poetry: 25 lines or 5 stanzas, whichever comes first
  • Zines: 8 pages or 2 hours of effort, whichever comes first.

AI generated works are not allowed.

For those who want to add to the collection without writing for a specific prompt, they can use the always-posted prompt: "There's only one you."

History

The prompt meme was quickly organized by caltrain, who goes by moregraceful on Tumblr. He has organized multiple prompt memes, albeit mainly focused on Hockey RPF. The participation in the first year reflects this, with Men's Hockey RPF taking a large share of the posted fanworks and largely outnumbering the next most popular fandom, Formula 1 RPF. The popularity shocked the organizer, who expected that the "meme would be me and like two and a half tumblr mutuals having a parallel play blast in our respective sports fandoms".[1]

For Year 2 of the prompt meme, there were multiple changes. The amount of prompts one could leave was increased to 50, up to five sports fandoms could be tagged (opposed to only one the year prior), the prompting and posting periods were extended, and an anonymous creator period was added.[2] The popularity of the exchange grew, with over three times the prompts and double the fills from the first year. The biggest shift in participation was the drastic increase in Cycling RPF prompts and fills and the decrease in Formula 1 RPF fills.

I'm so dead ass if Cycling RPF is THE fandom for 1u fills I'm literally going to be the happiest I've ever been. I didn't even KNOW there was Cycling fandom and now there's 65 prompts of Cycling RPF about men I've never heard of it in my life it makes me so happy. It makes me SO happy. that's what this is all about man. sports fandoms I've never heard of, athletes I didn't know existed, and people going hogwild creating stuff for their fandom. I love this prompt meme so much!!!!

78…..SEVENTY-EIGHT….fills are from cycling fandom. 78!!!!!!!!! That’s FOUR less than hockey rpf!! Cycling fandom if you’re out there I want you to know: you’re the only people I respect on this little blue planet we call hell. Your organizing power has me awed and humbled. Who is Wout van Aert [3]

For 2025, the changes were being required to tag a fandom, the prompts being limited to only 25 prompts and an extension of the anonymous period to five days.[4] The reduction in possible prompts was due to a number of participants last year only submitting numerous prompts without contributing any fills.[5]
