The great comment experiment or GCE was a commenting meme which took place in Livejournal user's rohandove journal, between May and July 2004. Its goal was to find out how many comments a single LJ post could get, and also to find out how long people would keep commenting on a completely "random" posts.
Origins
Rohandove's original post read:
The great comment experiment.
Ever wonder how many comments one post at a LJ can get?
Well, shall we all see. I wonder how may we can get on this post. So comment, say anything... pass it around.
Can you tell I am in an odd mood today. *g*
Response
The post garnered 100 comments in an hour and 500 comments in 24 hours.
Final count was 1388 comments.
Types of Comments
- Random "spam" comments such as Hi, yay, *waves*, comment, etc.
- Fic being posted in installments, notably ithiliana's LOTRIPS story "Slashy Nights"
- Picspams and icon spams
- Long comments designed to take up space and push the comments into a new page, such a poetry, song lyrics...
- etc.
Commemorative Icons
Icons were made (by ithiliana?) to commemorate the event:
Birth of a Meme?
On June 20, 2004, cathexys commented (over several comments to up the count, as was by then customary on the post), speculating about the posts' meme status:
everyone is doing this now...so i felt i needed to post to keep you ahead :-)
were you the first person to do it? then you singlehandedly started a meme
i've seen a whole bunch of them in HP fandom now
but none as much fun
as yours!!! *hugs and kisses*
