The Victorian Time Machine was a Doctor Who newsletter edited by Adrienne Losin, who was originally a co-founder of the Doctor Who Club of Victoria. Her publication remained an individualised expression of her own perspective, and the club came to publish its own material such as Sonic Screwdriver.

Another club co-founder, Judith McGinness, recalls how other club members began to develop a more autonomous operation in 1980:

... Adrienne had The Victorian Time Machine she was doing as a Newsletter. A lot of people thought we needed something new, as it was Adrienne’s project and it didn’t belong to the Club. Adrienne was a one person show, organized everything, was making all the decisions, no other people contributed to the Newsletter... So a few people said to Adrienne, “Look, we really need more people that want to volunteer to help, because it’s too big for one person.” ... Then everybody agreed, by voting, we needed a publication specifically for the Club. I suggested Sonic Screwdriver as a name, which all thought was a great idea. Now, 43 years later, Sonic Screwdriver is still going, which is just incredible.[1]
