The Terminator is a short, fast-paced action film, which hinges on time-travel from a dystopic future (to prevent or cause that future to occur).
Although the main action concerns Sarah Connor, an ordinary young waitress in Los Angeles, flash-forwards to the future provide a strong visual science fiction feel to the work. It is the first of what is now a series of films (and one television show), but was originally intended to stand alone. Its first sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, was released in 1992.
The Fandom
Although the film was successful in its theatrical run, it didn't develop a (media) fannish community at the time. The Terminator has been featured as a rare fandom in Yuletide several times, and was nominated as same for 2008.
However, the movie has fannish significance of a different kind: The time-traveling soldier from the future was played by Michael Biehn who later became Chris Larabee in The Magnificent Seven, and Sarah Connor was none other than Linda Hamilton who later played the heroine of the epic love story in Beauty and the Beast.

Canon-Reconciliation
A franchise of 20+ years inevitably has variances in canon. Some fans of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles carefully reconcile details of the television show with the first two films (but not the third); but Yuletide 2008 lists the film series and show as two different fandoms[1]
