The Sum of Zero is an X-Men story by Dex. Across New York, low-powered mutants are dying at the hands of a mysterious serial killer. What's the connection? The letter X and a list of names. It's up to Scott Summers, Emma Frost and OMC NYPD Detective Jonathon Caulder to stop him before "X marks the spot."
Reactions and Reviews
A story that pairs Scott Summers (Cyclops) with Emma Frost (the White Queen) posing as FBI agents who work with the local NYC police homicide department to profile a serial killer whose target is the mutant population. Definitely adult and not for the kiddies, but Dex (as usual) did his homework, and this story has the added plus of a good original character in the homicide detective. It's notable as it's something that isn't seen much in X-Men: a murder mystery.[1]
This is an amazingly well-written murder mystery, equal parts police procedural, horror, and suspense. It's an evocative look at the uneasy relationship between humans and mutants, as well as the uneasy relationship between Scott Summers and Emma Frost. (Let's ignore recent developments in the comics, okay? This story was written before all of that and is vastly more in character anyway.) Even if you don't know much about the X-Men, I highly recommend this story for the atmosphere and the gripping plot. I guarantee you'll be on the edge of your seat.
Dex's skill in writing the Sum of Zero was also recognised further abroad - on the Unstable Molecules superhero discussion board, he was included with established comic writers in someone's dream comic book roster.
