Reactions and Reviews
"The Squire of Eros" is an absolutely delightful Valentine‘s story:It‘s always great fun when Trelane visits the Enterprise, and this time he‘s chosen to do so right before the big Valentine‘s Day party. He is every bit his old campy self, all the while insisting he‘s much more mature than he was the last time Kirk is hyper-aware of the danger Trelane poses. He knows they are all essentially helpless in the face of Trelane‘s powers, but that doesn‘t keep him from trying to find a creative end-run around the still very-flawed wanna-be omnipotent being. It doesn‘t help that Spock is being snarky in a very Vulcan way towards Trelane. He still objects to Trelane – very strongly – and does not hesitate to say so. Trelane is Not Pleased. It‘s not often I see Spock depicted as a loose cannon, but he is here, and his behavior ratchets up Kirk‘s fears that the situation will quickly get out of control. And out of control it gets, when Trelane‘s interpretation of a classic Valentine‘s Day trope almost leads to disaster.
This delightful story has everything – humor, romance, life-threatening danger, the threat of heartbreak, interesting Vulcan anatomy, and even pre-reform Vulcan poetry! [1]
