Reactions and Reviews

Fantastic fun. I've been reading these wicked little B/D romps since they first started appearing on alt.sex.fetish.startrek years ago, and here they are collected in a zine. If you can imagine the buttoned-up Kathryn Janeway in black leather and cat o' nine tails, or even if you can't, this is for you. Surprisingly solid and emotional, with a lot of commentary on the show's events as they occurred. Rather strongly J/C, though non-monogamous and with plenty of bisexual activity from most of the crew. I hear Brannon Braga enjoys reading this, but don't let that stop you. [1]

Have you seen The Secret Logs of Mistress Janeway? - google it, tumblr won't let me send you a link - I personally LOVE it, found it years ago and enjoy reading every second of it, some of it repeatedly but I digress, I just wanted to know what you think?

Hi there - thanks for the ask! I have read a little bit of The Secret Logs of Mistress Janeway and there are aspects I really appreciate about what I saw and have heard about from others.

Generally I find i don’t have a lot of time for reading fanfic and when I do, my personal preference is for shorter serials or one-offs that really get into-depth into someone’s character or backstory. But I think it’s really cool that the creator of Secret Logs and others explore Janeway’s sexuality in a way that’s fun and creative and doesn’t take away from her being seen as a capable leader.

Star Trek fanfic has overall I think been really good for female and also LGBTQ fans in terms of giving them a universe with characters whose gender roles and traditional sexuality can be challenged, subverted and transformed.

If you’re into Star Trek and fanfic, you really have to read Joanna Russ’ 1986 essay “Pornography By Women, For Women, With Love”, which looks at Kirk/Spock slash and is one of the earliest academic studies of fanfiction.

And a slightly more accessible read is this more recent article by Melissa Pittman on “The Joy of Slash” for women writers.

While I think m/m slash is what some people prefer, TOS also didn’t give a lot of choices for women characters to write fic about. The later series we get m/m slash plus m/f, f/f and multiple pairings like Mistress Janeway.

I’ve tragically lost a link to an excellent article on J/C fic but if I find it, I’ll be sure to post. I did find another newer article on the dynamics between B'Elanna, Tom and Harry in Voyager fanfic.

One limitation is that both this last article and Russ’ use quite a bit of academic language, but basically they’re saying what fans already know: fanfic gives fans an opportunity to portray their favourite characters in a way that resonates even more with them. Often that has the effect of challenging the readers’ assumptions and expectations and making us open our minds and consider the possibilities that weren’t explored on the show. Not always, but often, these possibilities involve less traditional roles in terms of gender, sexual orientation or sexuality. And that is very cool. [2]

A classic of our time: the fabulous D/s adventures of Janeway and the gang.

Upside: Sheer sexy fun. Has that level of ridiculousness that just fills me with delighted giggles.

Downside: Well, there's the ridiculousness, and also that my favorite log entry, Objective/Subjective, is actually written by a guest author, Jared. (That being said, fabulous entry. Voyager frame story of a TOS-era "lesson" for Starfleet operatives to help demonstrate the necessity of remaining objective, regardless of, ah, provocation).[3]

I wouldnt recommend it for any kind of sexual gratification but I found it high in entertainment value.[4]
