Summary

"Not only does Kirk finally have to face Janice and settle their problem of fifteen years, but he may have to put up with the deaths of Scotty, McCoy, and Uhura. Also, meet Janice Rand's ex-husband!" [1]

Excerpts

Among the other thoughts in James Kirk's mind, was his desire to speak with Janice Rand. Since he took over USS ENTERPRISE from Will Decker, he hardly had a chance to speak to her. Of course, they had never been very close, but she had been his yeoman for a year and had been in love with him, as well. The Captain figured that he owed her at least a small chat about the intervening years. He sighed, and hit the communication button.

Janice entered her room in tears I "Oh God, why did you have to return? I thought I could forget about you, Tolon. I loved you so much, and I hated leaving you, but God! God help me!" She cried herself to sleep, incredulous to the fact that the being she had been married to for eight years had just re-entered her life.

Night fell, and Uhura and Bones set up a campfire. The night on Onteliotrope was warm and soothing, and the light from the three satellites was crisp and bright. Uhura sang a couple of songs to the patients, and then joined McCoy, who had been cooking some vegetables over the fire. "It's a good thing these turned out to be edible."

"Y'know, when I was eight, my grandfather took me on my first campfire." She paused, breathing in the cool night air, and enjoying the memory. "I was very close to my grandfather. He taught me all about nature. Gave me a true love for it."

"Then how did you end up in the Starfleet?" questioned McCoy.

"Oh, I don't know. It was just something that I always wanted to do. Especially in the communications department. I'll tell you a secret, Len," she smiled a sly smile. "As much as I love being a communications officer, and as much as I respect Captain Kirk, I wouldn't mind a bit if someday they gave me a ship of my own."

Bones didn't look surprised. "Not only would you make a damn good captain, Uhura, but as soon as we get back to THE ENTERPRISE, I might just be persuaded to mention the possibility to Captain Kirk."

"Thanks, but no thanks, Len. I want to earn it for myself. If the Captain does decide someday to mention me to the bigwigs for a command, I want it to be his decision."

"It already was," McCoy blurted out.

"What?" Uhura replied.

"Jim wanted to tell you himself, but the plague broke out. He has officially requested that your name be put on the command list."

Uhura jumped up in joy. The jump took most of her strength, and when she came down, she could hardly stand. Breathing heavily, she remarked, "Len, thank you."
