The Practical Cats Affair is a gen Man from UNCLE digest-sized novel by Jody A. Cummings. It was the winner of a 1991 FanQ. The cover artist is Paulie.

Description from the Publisher

Digest size novella, Illya and Napoleon go undercover at a cat show to find microdot hidden in a rhinestone collar. But, worst luck, rhinestone collars are in this year! Oy. Nominated for the 1991 Fan Q for Best Novella. Paulie is nominated also for the art work.

Reactions and Reviews

I love cats. I love the idea of a cat-loving Illya. I love T.S. Elliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, and the famous musical based on it. I love Paulie Gilmore's artwork. I love the concept of a MUNCLE story inspired by Cats, and the delicious notion of a villain named Macavity. All of which The Practical Cats Affair has. It also has a writer who can put words together nicely, and who can, in the style of the series, come up with rather kooky secondary characters. What it doesn't have and desperately needed is some more thought to go into making it believable, and not making the intelligence of its main characters a doubtful proposition (which, I admit, is just such a proposition on alarmingly numerous occasions in the aired series, but in my opinion, fanfic should not treat folly as canon and repeat it)... I have been very uncomplimentary, I know. But when I truly despair of a writer, I find no reason to devote time and effort to write about the work. In this case, I saw a lot of potential, good writing style, a genuinely true ring to the voices of Napoleon and Illya, and an ease of flow in the narrative. As much as I ask the writer, I ask the editors: please put some more work into the stories, and don't let a potentially good story suffer like this. Some thought and a rewrite could've made this a most pleasant, believable novel. [1]
