Reactions and Reviews

1995

Another thing I really hate is a dominance scenario in which the top calls the bottom "bitch" or especially "cunt." Can't men think of ways to insult each other without insulting women at the same time? I come across this one a lot

since I like this kind of story. I realize the usage is probably realistic in terms of present-day practices, but this is a case in which realism definitely detracts from the enjoyment of the story for me. Interestingly, I don't mind nearly so much if the person who says it is supposed to be a truly evil, horrible individual— like the vile Tarrant of Jane Mailander's "The Pilot's Tail" in Oblaque Sextus. (I must be the only member of the Tarrant apa who liked that story; I took it as a kind of AU.) But if it's a supposedly sympathetic character who's just playing a game with his lover, it makes me feel a lot less sympathetic toward him and definitely detracts from my enjoyment. [1]

Rather anti-Tarrant fans may like The Pilot's Tail from Oblique. It is gloriously unfair to the pretty pilot, and gains some of its impetus from imagining Tarrant as a rather nasty public-school type, but it's certainly possible to imagine that this isn't quite the Tarrant from canon but how he just might have turned out if he was just a little worse. The sexual politics of Tarrant's unwarranted assumption is wonderful social comedy.[2]
