Made as a companion piece to Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg's Band of Brothers, The Pacific is a miniseries set in the Pacific Theatre of World War II, specifically the islands of Guadalcanal (Isatabu), Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. Unlike Band of Brothers, which followed the men of one company, The Pacific has three different story lines centered on three different men in the 1st Division of the United States Marines: John Basilone (played by Jon Seda), James Leckie (played by James Badge Dale), and Eugene Sledge (played Joe Mazzello).
Each man carries his own storyline separate from the others, and much of the narrative action in each storyline is self-contained. Although the characters/stories do cross paths at specific points, this triptych-like view of the war has led The Pacific fandom to split the miniseries into ''teams''. Team Leckie is composed primarily of James Leckie, Sid Phillips, Bill "Hoosier" Smith, Lew "Chuckler" Juergens, and Bud "Runner" Conley. Team Sledge is comprised of Eugene Sledge, Merriell "Snafu" Shelton, R.V. Burgin, Bill Leyden, Andrew "Ack-Ack" Haldane, and Edward "Hillbilly" Jones. Team Basilone tends to be categorized as John Basilone alone (whose storyline is markedly different than the others'), though it might also include Lena Mae Riggi Basilone, Chuck Tatum, Steve Evanson, and others.

Fandom
Though the series has a dedicated and active fandom on Tumblr and Livejournal, The Pacific fandom is not a large one. The fandom has a heavy slash fanbase, with pairings in the various "teams". Popular pairings include Sledge/Snafu and Ack-Ack/Hillbilly.
