Reactions and Reviews
Sandra tells a great H/C story but what makes this piece of fanfic so good is the way she tells it. She opens her story not on the main characters but on an original character that I swear she must have auditioned actors for, as he is so real in just the first couple of sentences. The reader follows young Arturo, a 17 yr old Peruvian rebel until he reports for duty as a guard in a rebel village where we learn Blair is a hostage.
I confess I haven't had Geography since 4th Grade but it is obvious that Sandra has done a bit of research on this. She has marvelous descriptions of the area and the people. Some of the characters are a bit stereotypical but it works with the narrative and this story doesn't require a great deal of depth spent on secondary characters. Sandra gives the reader just enough information to see her original characters without letting them take over the story.
In my opinion she has nailed Jim and Blair's characters perfectly. Blair is his usual optimistic self in the face of adversity. Jim is concerned, yet stoic and I think she gives us a peek at the Jim who was active in covert ops. He is both an efficient, deadly soldier and a gentle caring friend.
Jim is not very wordy in this story, there is very little emotional verbal exchange but Jim's caring and concern is demonstrated by his actions.
The ending has a twist and is a bit sad but that just makes the reader pause and think a little.
Sandra has covered all the basics of writing a good piece of fiction, good opening, suspenseful build up, a climax and a solid closing. If there were any misspelled words or grammatical errors I missed them completely!
I'll be looking forward to her next piece of writing. [1]
This is basically a good old-fashioned, gen, hurt-comfort story that has been one of my favourites since I came into this fandom. Kidnapped by Peruvian guerillas, Blair is very sick and close to death. To pass the long, painful days, he tries to come up with his 'most perfect day ever'. Jim, of course, is on the case... Hurt Blair; Jungle Jim - What more do you need? [2]
