Canon
The series features Frances "Frankie" Heck, a working class, middle-aged, Midwestern woman and her husband Mike, who reside in the small fictional town of Orson, Indiana. They are the parents of three children, Axl, Sue, and Brick.
Fandom
The Middle has a fairly small fandom, with only 57 works posted to FFN and 36 works posted to AO3 as of May 25, 2016. However, gifsets and other various fanworks are posted to Tumblr fairly often. Nearly all the fanworks for the series focuses on the kids, especially Sue and Axl Heck.
Shipping
While the fandom part is fairly small, various pairings have appeared. The most popular one seems to be the incest pairing of Sue/Axl (often referred to as "Heckcest"). Other pairings include: Axl/Sean, Sue/Morgan, Axl/Cassidy, Fankie/Mike, Sue/Derrick, Sue/Darrin, and Axl/OCs.
