The Podcast artwork for The Magnus Protocol. An old-fashioned beige, square CRT computer screen takes up the majority of the frame, with a beige/grey keyboard shadowed beneath it. Orange sparks, like the very edge of a fire, scatter across the foreground. On the monitor is the red OIAR crest, obscured by scan lines, features a lion on the left, and a unicorn on the right, framing a triangular shield and a wreath of laurels. Across the top is the initials: OIAR. On the bottom is the motto, Non Vacillabimus. Underneath this crest are the words, The Magnus Protocol.

The Magnus Protocol, previously known as The Magnus Archives 2, is an ongoing audio-drama "sidequel" taking place in the same extended universe as The Magnus Archives. Despite not yet having been released, there were already fanworks and memes about it, starting on 2 November 2022, only 4 days after the announcement of its name.[1]

The series began airing on January 18, 2024, with new episodes releasing every Thursday.

Canon

The Magnus Protocol takes place in an alternate universe in which the infamous Magnus Institute—located in Manchester, rather than London—burned down in 1999. The story begins "almost 25 years later," presumably in late 2023 or 2024, and focuses on two Civil Service Workers in the Office of Incident Assessment and Response (often abbreviated as the OIAR), Alice Dyer and Samama Khalid.[2]

The Magnus Protocol was first teased through an Alternate Reality Game, and officially announced with a YouTube video, Twitch livestream, and Kickstarter[3].

Example Fanworks

There was one fanfiction written after the reveal of the title, but before any reveal of plot or characters, titled "A New Tape for the Institute File" and written by Archive of Our Own user chewsdaychilling. It proposed a scenario that The Magnus Protocol was in some way concerned with finding the tapes from The Magnus Archives, something many fans hoped for, yet did not expect or want to become a reality.[7] Many similar works have followed, most about Alice and Sam either meeting or hearing about characters from The Magnus Archives, most often Jonathan Sims and Martin Blackwood. As of 13 August 2023, all fanworks barring one have been crossovers with The Magnus Archives.

The one that isn't, is titled "Into the Ruins" and written by InArduisFidelis, and is speculation for the beginning of the series.[8]
