"The Klingon Gambit" Is the second novel via the Timescape line of Trek books. It is not the best, but it supplies one of the most unusual situations for our S.T. family. It revolves around a stand off between our Enterprise & a Klingon "Dreadnought" warship. The Enterprise is on an investigation of the mysterious death of an all Vulcan crew on board the T'bau. The story mostly takes place on the planet where the T'bau was found. It appears that this world had some peculiar effects on the crew of the T'bau & the Enterprise crew. Mr. Spock is effected in the most illogical way as he is being chased by love-lorn female crewmember Candra Avitts (Miss Chapel is very unhap p about her affectionate attitude towards Spock.) Lt. Avitts practically drools over Spock.
To complicate matters, Mr. Vardeman brings in a wonderful character: Dr. Threllvon-da. He is an Andorian arcoligist that sets out to fight the Klingons from messing up his find. The author also introduces a female Scott (which makes Scotty pretty happy). Chief McConel, a fiery young redhead with a flair for the gambling tables. If Vardeman does ever write another novel, I hope she's still around. She'd make a great character for the movies.
The writer lacks giving suspense to the story, but keeps the readers interest with characters, subplots & twists throughout the story. The Klingons are as nasty & obnoxious as ever. McCoy has not changed his opinions of Klingons one bit. It would make a good ST TV episode, but it is not the same quality as either movie. Still, read it for the ending.[1]
