The Genesis Awards was a series of awards for fanfic authors in the Final Fantasy VII fandom. The awards are for pieces of fiction that “show a certain standard of grammar and formatting, relevance to canon and characterisation.”[1] Although primarily created for Final Fantasy VII fanfiction, in 2009, they also accepted nominations from within the Final Fantasy X fandom.

The awards were originally proposed in 2006 at fanfiction.net [2]]. In 2007 the awards were handed over to another administrator who ran the first rounds 2006 to 2008. In March 2007, the awards found a new home on ProBoards.com. [3]

In July 2008, the awards underwent another series of administrative changes causing them to be pushed into 2009. A new website was designed and the forum was moved to a more secure forum server[4], and a podcast, the Shinra News Network, was introduced.

The third, and possibly final round of awards were held in 2009 and were split into two categories: Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy X.
