The GIRLnee Fest - otherwise known as the SHINee Replayed Fest - was a SHINee fic fest based on Twitter and AO3.

The fest was the fourth ever SHINee fest to debut, although, the official debut is not known, due to the moderator deleting previous tweets from the original creator. The original creator gave the fest up before it began, with a new moderator taking over the account in 2021 and running the fest.

The fest focuses on GIRLnee - a term for SHINee's cross-dressing alter egos in canon SHINee lore. The fest focuses mainly on F/F relationships, where all other SHINee fests focus more heavily, or solely, on M/M.

'SHINee Replayed' came from a pun of SHINee's debut single Replay, otherwise known as 누난 너무 예뻐, or, Noona, you're so pretty. "Noona" is a term used by Korean men to refer to women older than them.

Background

On July 5th, 2020, Taemythos debuted a poll asking if people would want new fests for SHINee - one being a fest focusing on alternate universes, being SHINee Rebanded, and one asking about a fest for GIRLnee - being The GIRLnee Fest. SHINee Rebanded won with 51.5% of a 105 vote pull. The GIRLnee Fest acquired 18.1% of the 105 votes, but Both came second with 30.5% of the vote[1]. SHINee Rebanded debuted on July 6th, but The GIRLnee Fest did not officially open until late July.

After a long hiatus which has been known to find a new moderator for the account - with the original creator opting to give the fest up - they first tweeted under new ownership on July 21, 2021[2].

On July 31st, the moderator said they wanted to do a summer/autumn round start[3].

On August 11, the moderator stated they would start the fest with a prompted round in September[4]. However, on September 15, the moderator stated they had to clean up their own schedule and finish some things before they could start the fest round,[5] and they debuted the fest Carrd on September 23rd[6].

First Round

On September 24th, the fest published the official thread for their first round[7].

The schedule was as follows[8]:

  • Sept 25 - Schedule Release
  • Sept 27 - Prompting Begins
  • Oct 11 - Archive Finalised
  • Oct 12 - Archive Revealed / Claiming Begins
  • Nov 22 - Check In / Claiming Ends
  • Jan 4 - Final Submissions

On September 26th, they posted a "GIRLnee Prompt Inspiration" thread, showcasing various ideas of F/F relationships and themes that authors and prompters may use for inspiration[9]. On September 27, prompting opened and they began a Prompt Thread, showing some of the varying prompts that had been sent into for the fest already[10].

The fest made it to 32 prompts in 2 days showing the popularity of the idea of a F/F SHINee fest[11].

Claiming for the fest opened on October 12th[12]. By October 18, the fest had nine active writers for the event[13].

On January 13, the fest suffered some dropped claims and was waiting on a final writer to submit[14]. This writer never submitted, ending up with eight finalised works for the first round[15].

Posting for the round began January 18 and ended on the 21st[16].

The eight works for the fests were

  1. Swoon For Me - a mature Junghee/Gwiboon (Jongkey)
  2. The stars sure are there - an explicit Junghee/Taeyeon (JongTae)
  3. Tayf - a general Junghee/Minjung (JongHo)
  4. perfectly normal thursday afternoon - an explicit Junghee/Eunsook (Jongyu)
  5. the bare thread like strings - a general Junghee/Eunsook (Jongyu)
  6. Detention - a general Minjung/Everyone (Minho/Everyone)
  7. Oh She Is - a teen Gwiboon/Taeyeon (Taekey)
  8. Hey. hey - an explicit Gwiboon/Junghee (Jongkey)

In total, the fest garnered 27,328 words of F/F content for SHINee, with all authors writing one fic other than one author who wrote four.

Adoption Round, Hiatus and Future

After postings, on January 25th, 2021, GIRLnee Fest said they would be running an adoption round[17]. On January 31, they published an AO3 collection and claiming form[18]. A Carrd for adoptions was set up.

The fest went quiet shortly after and on September 25, 2022 the fest announced that the fest would not be running in 2022 as the moderator could not work on their offline responsibilities and the fest at the same time. They were unsure if the would be able to run the fest in the future as well, and was looking for someone to take over the fest[19].

Since then, no further contact has come from the fest.

As of December 28, 2022 The GIRLnee Fest is the only SHINee fic fest that does not feature on SHINee AO3's fest list[20] - meaning the moderator has not given permission or not replied to them. This has caused minor debate if the moderator still checks the account. The original creator is also not known.

The fest is currently debated as to whether it's closed or on hiatus.
