The Fundamentals of Caring is a Yuuri/Viktor sickfic written by Braveten. It is a fluffy sickfic in which Yuuri becomes ill and delirious and Viktor is forced to take care of him. It is mostly canon compliant and depicts the developing feelings of both characters, and so is set prior to Yuuri and Viktor's established relationship. The fic also contains some eventual smut in Chapter 2.

Synopsis

Summary:' “Let me guess, you’re going to go take care of Yuuri while he sleeps? Just in case he sneezes or something?” Yurio rolls his eyes, folding his arms across his chest. “Viktor, you’re whipped.”

Viktor rubs the back of his neck as he leans against the wall. “What does that mean?”

“It means that if Yuuri asked you to do a little dance for him in nothing but a coconut bra and a hula skirt, you’d do it.”

Viktor pauses, confused. “And that's a bad thing?”

Braveten also wrote a companion fic to The Fundamentals of Caring titled Easy Now with My Heart. Instead of Yuuri getting sick, alternatively, Viktor is the sick one. Though part of the same series, both fics are not set in the same timeline and so the second fic is therefore not a continuation.

The fic was also translated into Chinese by betty5271.

Reactions & Reviews

On Archive of Our Own, the fic has gained over 8800 kudos, making it one of the most popular sickfic on the archive as of 2018. Additionally, the fic also ranks in the top 20 Yuri!!! on Ice fics on AO3.

One of my favourite hurt/comfort fics! Yuuri comes down with a nasty cold and Victor tries to take care of him the best that he can. Full of hilariously delusional Yuuri, caring Victor, and ALL THE FLUFF! So cute, definitely recommend![1]

My number one highly recc sick fic! Yuuri is “dying” (he’s actually delirious with a cold), Viktor is flustered and doesn’t know how to handle things, and Yurio is so done and buys them ice cream. I’ve read this dozens of times and it never gets old. Explicit rating bc there are some, you know, passionate love moments, but I usually skim/skip those parts and can still enjoy the fic just the same.[2]

I fell in love with this story, really. Sickfics are quite common, that's true, but this really is something else. It kept me hanging, and laughing and fangirling (does this verb even exist, I wonder?) all the time and I've probably read it like... A million times. Yuuri is just so shy and insecure and is such a lovely cinnamon roll, and Viktor is just so head over heels that he doesn't know what he should actually do with him and yes, I loved every single bit of it.[3]

Oh god this was absolutely adorable. I have a great weakness for sickfics and this one is one of the best I've ever read! You put everything I love in sickfics into this and even more and I can't express just how in love with this I am with words. Seriously I was screaming all throughout this fic and I wondered if it was legitimately possible to die from cuteness overload! The way you write their characters is spot on and I could totally see all the dialogue coming straight out of an episode.

P.S. I usually don't like smut in sickfics but the way you handled it was A++++ and it flowed perfectly. Thanks for writing this![4]
