Westley is a character in the 1973 novel and 1987 movie The Princess Bride. In the movie, he is played by Cary Elwes.
Canon
Westley is a farmboy and Buttercup's true love. When Westley's ship is attacked by pirates, Westley becomes one of them, eventually assuming the identity of the Dread Pirate Roberts. Under this identity, he stages a rescue of Buttercup -- first from Vizzini, and later from Prince Humperdinck. He is also referred to as the man in black by Inigo Montoya.
Westley is extremely smart, cunning, and a terrific ambidextrous swordsman.
Fandom
Westley's catchphrase is "As you wish", and has become synonymous with romance and devotion.
Shipping
The canon ship Buttercup/Westley is by far the most popular, but Westley/Inigo Montoya is a notable slash ship that also has a decent amount of content.
