The Dark Wheel was a novella by Robert Holdstock included with all versions of the computer game Elite (1984), giving game background and details of the society the game is set in. It describes the evolution of a novice pilot, Alex Ryder, out to avenge his father's death, and the means by which he slowly acquires the skills and equipment he needs to do so. Words from the book were also used as passwords to access the game, e.g. the first word of the fourth paragraph on page 9. A full summary of the plot can be found on the Elite Wiki.
Elite was the first computer game to include material of this kind, and the idea was widely copied at the time.
