Reactions and Reviews

1997

I also really like the stories that deal with Kirk’s inability to cope with Spock’s absence when he’s away at Gol, though there aren’t too many of these. I don’t even believe in that scenario, necessarily, since to me my fine, strong captain would do just fine without his Vulcan friend, thank you, if only to show to one and all that he can. Even if inside he is grieving tremendously, I don’t know how much he would either show it to the world or even admit it to himself. But give me a story where he almost has a nervous breakdown, (there’s one by Jenny Elson called, I think,Nor The Stars Shall Shine), or one where Kirk just about drinks himself to death, or where Lori sadly leaves him because he’s so morose about Spock, and I am very happy. Of course, these are only provisionally unhappy stories, since we all know Spock comes back from Gol when his captain’s mind calls him, and that he does return from the dead. [1]
