The Dandelion Report was an online zine that aimed to provide basic information about filkers and their music, as well as highlighting new and established filkers within the community. It was conceived and run by fan and filker Debbie Ridpath Ohi. She was a member of the filk group Urban Tapestry.
Although the website went offline, possibly in 2009, Debbie still maintains the Filk FAQ page on her personal website.
What's with the dandelion?
Kathy Mar, a well-known filker, made the dandelion a symbol of filking."In taking the dandelion as the filker's symbol," said Mar in a flyer she distributed at various filk conventions, "I hope to convey, as gently as the flower-power movement did, that filk is almost impossible to root out. If disturbed, it tends to proliferate. It can be beneficial at times, and it can even be beautiful in spite of its weedy reputation."
You can find the full text of her explanation here.
Not all filkers are comfortable with the "unwanted weed" context, however. See Bill Sutton's thoughts on the topic, here.
