The Court of Dreams is a digital fanart of Feyre/Rhysand created by Charlie Bowater in 2016. Though initially a work of fanart, the piece inspired the canonical cover for the third book of the ACOTAR series, A Court of Wings and Ruin.
Artist's comments
Another piece of fanart for S. J. Maas' A Court of Mist and Fury. Rhys & Feyre I think I might subconiously be trying to set a personal record for how much fanart I can make based on one authors work... [1]
MY BABIES ARE DONE. *dies* Rhys & Feyre, looking all High Lord & Ladylike. This was soooo much fun to work on and I’ve already ranted and raved about how much I love these two… and everyone else in ACOMAF… and Sarah… and[2]
Fan comments
I ended up reading both books because of your incredible art, as I'm sure many people did. You should be entitled to a cut of the proceeds from the publisher haha![3]
I am literally speechless about how stunning this piece is, and how accurate the portrayal is to my imagination. Absolutely perfect[4]
Oh god, I love this! What a cool picture! I love how they frame the picture. And I love the added sparkles to Feyre's dress. Their love for each other shines through in this picture! Rhys's smile is so nicely drawn! and I love the three stars over the mountain in the background[5]
Impact on canon
Sarah J. Maas, the author of the series, has regularly spoken of her appreciation for fanart and fan culture. In 2017, she unveiled the cover for the third book, A Court of Wings and Ruin in her e-newsletter. Sarah explained that she adored the design of Feyre's dress in Bowater's artwork, and so asked Adrian Daditch (the cover artist) to replicate the design of the dress in the cover for the third book.
When we were bouncing around ideas for what sort of dress Feyre should wear on this cover, the dress that Charlie created in this piece of fan-art [...] was the only one I could think of that perfectly portrayed what was in my head. Her art has been such a source of delight and inspiration for me, so it’s an absolute honor to have her leave her mark on the series in this way.[7]
Bowater was later hired as one of six illustrators for the official A Court of Thorns and Roses Coloring Book, and has since provided illustrations for Sarah's Throne of Glass series and A Court of Thorns and Roses series.
