Reactions and Reviews
1992
A very good and long "prison" story. Well written, without any unnecessary violence and very gripping -- in a word: I like it! The only think I miss: why didn't Spock think of a bonding? On each page I was waiting for this! They had to face lifelong imprisonment and they feared for the well being of each other. A bonding would have been the logical thing, because they had permanent contact, especially when one of them had to go to solitary confinement! [1]

Prison scenarios, done well, can really wrench it out of you. There were some glitches in this one that kind of got in the way. For one, Kirk gave up too easily; was far too disturbed by the visual attention of the other prisoners. This was a strong Spock story, and that part was fine.As near as I could tell, they were imprisoned a couple of weeks, and conditions were poor but not intolerable. They were able to share a cell, even a bunk, had adequate clothing and daily showers.
Of course, it was the communal shower that kept getting Kirk into trouble. Let’s just say he turned a lot of heads, not all of them well-intentioned (and no pun intended either).
This was fairly long and well written, it was just the characterization that seemed off to me. My admiration of JTK comes as much from his strength of spirit as from his looks, and I don’t connect with him when he is portrayed as weak and self-pitying.
If you enjoy a protective, no-nonsense Vulcan, by all means read this -- you will find him here and he’s very well done. [2]
