Reactions and Reviews

1989

The gem of the zine. Wonderful plot, the writing style smooth and eloquent. But would Spock, even in his condition, fail to recognize Jim no matter what the disguise? I didn't think so, and was concerned that it would stand in the way of my enjoyment of the story. But after reading on and losing myself in the emotions of the tale, that problem ceased to bother me. In this instance, I was convinced. Good writing, and well thought out plot. [1]

This was probably the best-written story in the zine, though I had a few problems with it. First, it wasn't adequately explained why Kirk didn't simply reveal himself once Spock confessed his love for his captain. Spock may have spouted protests about not wanting to 'rape' Kirk, but surely he was past the point of no return. Secondly, I've gotten tired of stories that make Kirk's mother out to be unbelievably all- wonderful and too much of a know-it-all, as she was in this story. I can't believe Kirk and Spock couldn't have worked out their problems without her interference; the love was strong enough.

On the other hand, the story was interesting throughout and most of the dialogue was handled well.

I liked the way Kirk showed his love for Spock — by carrying out his plan -- rather than the usual spouting of words. It was also refreshing to have the first attempt at intercourse less than successful. Also, despite my criticism above, I did enjoy the special closeness Kirk shared with his mother.

The dog, Jupiter, was a unique 'character', though I think he got more attention than was justified by his lack of importance to the plot.

Overall, a nice, memorable novella. [2]
