The Bond is a Kirk/Spock story by Ladyhawk.
Reactions and Reviews
A few issues ago Ivy initiated an interesting discussion about stories that are romantic versus stories with active sex. Until recently I would have been able to classify everything K/S I‘ve read into one camp or the other or both. Then along came Ladyhawk, whose proven that it‘s possible to convey a passionate, decades long bonded relationship that is neither romantic or sexy yet believable and very clearly much more than a deep friendship. Who knew? And that wasn‘t the only surprise. The Bond tells the story of Kirk and Spock‘s personal relationship from the time they bonded at the end of the ST TOS episode Amok Time to the end of Star Trek Generations as related by Jim Kirk. It‘s easy to understand how Chris Pine‘s arrogant, cocky Kirk will mature into this quietly arrogant, self-assured, occasionally self-involved one. This is TOS Kirk. The command crew is his chosen family and Spock is his lifelong mate of choice. This is TOS Spock but in some ways, a more subtly alien one than Nimoy‘s. The storyline strays little from what was filmed. Those moments that felt as if they should have been edited out process are here but they are no longer jarring. They make sense, even Antonia. Something else I didn‘t think was possible. And, yes, there was some "action". I can‘t imagine it being otherwise for the Kirk of any universe. In fact, in the first few sentences Kirk confesses that he and Spock have had sex exactly four times in thirty years. The first one was pon farr. You‘ll have to read The Bond yourself to find out about the others. [1]
