Reactions and Reviews
It was really a treat to read this funny story! Poor Spock stood bravely his ground! My favorite scene: When Spock explains the Orion slave to Scotty! [1]
Kirk’s birthday is looming, (from clues given by the author I imagine this is his fiftieth birthday); he is not looking forward to it and has told Spock that he wishes for it to be ignored. At first, Spock intends to do as he has been told but McCoy persuades him that this is not a good idea. Unfortunately for Spock (but not for the reader) all does not go to plan in the search for the ideal birthday gift and he is confronted with a situation that even he finds difficult to deal with. He persuades McCoy to help him sort things out then is reduced to a state of near panic by Kirk’s early return from a meeting. McCoy sends the overwhelmed Spock to meet Kirk and tells him to improvise which after a shaky start, while he gathers his wits, is exactly what Spock does. Even then all is not over for Spock for an overheard conversation means he is forced to explain to Kirk exactly what had happened. The only aspect of this story that I did not find really convincing was how the mix-up over the present occurred in the first place but that is a minor point and not one I noticed on my first reading. This is a light-hearted story which still manages to show the depth of camaraderie between members of the Enterprise’s crew. I also enjoy the picture of Spock for once unable to think of what he should do next and willing both to accept McCoy’s advice and act upon it. [2]
